In the back, the city is shown as a dark, polluted place, with smog-filled skies and dirty streets. The two worlds are separated by a thin line, but the contrast between them is stark. This painting is a metaphor for the way our world is divided between those who have access to clean, natural surroundings and those who live in polluted, man-made environments.
